Event | Just Crushing
July 20th @ 11am, Muscatine County Fair
Join BFF Project Grantees: Allison Rowe & Nancy Nowacek of Working Group and witness Just Crushing in a special heat of the Demolition Derby at the Muscatine County Fair (https://muscatinecountyfair.com/event/demo-derby-3/).
Just Crushing is a public art project where teens from Eastern Iowa design and decorate derby cars inspired by major political issues that matter to them—mental health, climate change, and more. Then, in a specially dedicated heat at the Muscatine County Fair's Demolition Derby, drivers crash those issue-themed cars for a cheering crowd. Created through a summer camp blending civic education with art-making, Just Crushing transforms polarized politics into a shared spectacle of destruction, catharsis, and creativity. The project centers teen voices and turns destruction into a platform for dialogue—not division.
Support for this work is provided by Big Field Fund (BFF), a program of Public Space One. Funding is provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. In addition to the BFF, Just Crushing is supported by a grant from the Iowa Arts Council, made possible by the Iowa Economic Development Authority, Lenoch & Cilek ACE Hardware, as well as many friends and family who contributed to the Just Crushing crowdfunding campaign.
